Chewy Sesame Bars – A Tasty Sweet Treat

These homemade sesame bars are chewy, delicious little energy dense morsels! Similar to the chewy sesame bars you can buy from the supermarket (only with more goodness and no nasties) they’re a great snack.

The store-bought variety were something I loved as a kid. I have been wanting to try my hand at recreating them for ages. I’m so happy with how they turned out and I hope you love them too!

Whether it’s a snack to fight off hunger, a few bites with a cuppa, or just to cure a sweet craving, these homemade treats are hard to resist. Be careful, it can be hard to stop at one!

I’ve suggested dividing the recipe into 30 bars, but if preferred you can halve the size and make ‘bites’ instead of ‘bars’, to enjoy them for longer. They can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge. They also freeze and defrost well.

Benefits of Eating Sesame Seeds Regularly

Naturally high in several minerals, sesame seeds are thought to be a healthy inclusion in a balanced diet. They are high in calcium, B vitamins, fibre and good fats and rich in antioxidants. It is also thought they offer good support for a healthy immune system.

What is Nut Butter?

Nut Butter is a spread made from nuts which you can easily make at home with your thermal cooker or other high powered blender.

I’ve linked my ABC Nut Butter in the ingredients list as it is a great mix of nuts. However, if you’re low on nuts or just don’t want to make your own, you can use a store bought nut butter such as peanut butter.

Just a few Simple Steps to Homemade Thermomix Sesame Bars

First place sesame seeds, pepitas and sunflower seeds in a large frying pan. Give the nuts a quick chop in thermie, then add these to the pan too.

Toast until golden, similar to what you see below.

Meanwhile, warm up the honey, nut butter and tahini in your thermal cooker.

Then, add the toasted seeds and flaxseed into the thermal cooker. Mix. Transfer into a lined slice tin, or silicon slice form. Use a spatula to smooth the top and edges, then leave to set completely.

Once completely cooled and set, you can turn out from the slice tin/form and slice into portions.

Chewy Sesame Bars

These tasty morsels are just like the Europe sesame bars, only nourishing – careful, it's hard to stop at one!

Ingredients

  • 170 g sesame seeds
  • 50 g sunflower seeds
  • 50 g pepitas
  • 80 g mixed nuts such as almonds, cashews, macadamias, pistachios (Note 1)
  • 200 g raw honey (Note 2)
  • 80 g Nut Butter (Note 1)
  • 40 g Hulled Tahini (Note 3)
  • 15 g flaxseed meal (Note 4)

Instructions

  • Line a slice tin with baking paper, or set aside a good quality silicon slice form.
  • Place sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and pepitas in a large frying pan.
  • Place nuts in mixer bowl. Chop 6 seconds/speed 5/MC on. Add to the seeds in frying pan. Toast on medium heat 6-8 minutes, stirring constantly to prevent burning, until sesame seeds are golden brown.
  • Meanwhile, place honey, nut butter and tahini in mixer bowl. Cook 10 minutes/steaming temperature/speed 1/MC on.
  • Add toasted seeds and nuts and flaxmeal. Combine 1.5 minutes/steaming temperature/speed 2/MC off.
  • Working quite fast, transfer mixture to prepared slice tin. Use a spatula to press down the surface until compact and even. Leave to cool to room temperature before slicing into 30-60 pieces (depending on how much of a treat you'd like!)
  • Store in an airtight container with baking paper in between each layer to prevent sticking.

Notes

1. NUT FREE: Replace nuts with more sunflower seeds/pepitas and replace nut butter with a seed butter.
2. VEGAN: Replace honey with rice malt syrup.
3. Tahini adds a lovely element to these but if preferred you can replace with an extra 40g nut butter.
4. You can make flaxseed meal by milling flaxseeds in your thermal mixer for 10 seconds/speed 9/MC on, or until texture is fine. You will need to do roughly 100g+ at a time in order for them to mill down properly.

These are brilliant
I added dedicated coconut but I don’t think it made a difference because the flavour is so over powering
I have also tried them with melted dark chocolate and plain as per the recipe which a friend made and they were brilliant
Only thing is that it was hard to spread but that could be because I added a hand full of coconut so it could have stiffen them up!

I’ve made this several times now with the rice malt syrup and also excluded the linseed meal and it’s amazing! Also used peanut butter as I haven’t made my own nut butter yet! Took it to work and now a couple of them are also making it!

Very yummy! My fussy toddler has given thumbs up. Used almond meal instead of flaxseed meal. Worked well!

I have serious issues with this recipe…..it is too amazing, and just want to keep eating ! I made ABC butter first ( have never made any form of nut butter) could have just stopped there. This is very dangerous with only two of us !

Oh my goodness these are amazing!! Super easy and very hard to stop at one. I made the ABC spread too and the kids are fighting over the jar with a spoon.

Just lovely. Wasn’t sure what to expect as I didn’t have enough sesame seeds or any sunflower seeds at all. I upped the nuts to meet the grams. Toasted for a bit longer. Beef to move quickly to pan indeed! Delicious though.
