Washing your Thermomix bowl is generally a quick and easy process. Today I’m sharing with you Thermomix dishwasher instructions, including a quick video down below showing you how to arrange the bowl, blades, lid, MC and butterfly in the dishwasher. Whilst I don’t demonstrate where I place the splash guard, simmering basket or Varoma, you’ll find my recommendations for these parts in the write-up below.
I’ve also included a couple of my favourite manual cleaning tools and tips. Not sponsored, just a fan!
Plus, if you have stubborn marks in the bowl – scorches or burns common when using the high heat function – scroll a bit further down for instructions on how to do a Thermomix eggshell lemon wash. This makes light work of those sorts of marks! It’s also a good thing to do if you feel your bowl has dulled over time. The end result is bright and sparkling!
Thermomix Dishwasher How-To
Which Parts of the Thermomix are Dishwasher-Safe?
It might be obvious, but I’m going to mention it anyway – the main large white base that plugs in to the power is NOT dishwasher-safe. That said, everything else is!
Here’s a list for you of the dishwasher-safe parts:
- Stainless steel bowl
- Grey plastic base of the bowl
- Lid for the bowl
- Measuring cup (MC)
- Blades
- Butterfly whisk attachment
- Simmering basket
- Varoma / steaming attachment
- Varoma tray
- Varoma lid
- Splash guard
This is How I Recommend Washing the Dishwasher-Safe Parts of the TMX in the Dishwasher:
- If the bowl has a lot of residue inside you can fill with water up to around the 500ml line and add a drop of dishwashing liquid to it. Put it back on the thermie base and mix 10 seconds/speed 10. Discard water and rinse the inside of the bowl under the tap.
- If the bowl doesn’t have a lot of residue inside you can just rinse under the tap – to be honest, I find this is all that’s needed the majority of the time.
- After rinsing, separate the grey plastic base from the stainless steel bowl, and remove blades from the bowl.
- The grey base doesn’t usually need washing, but if it does get dirty, you can place it on the top rack of the dishwasher.
- Place the bowl upside down on the bottom shelf of the dishwasher.
- Once the bowl is in place, insert the shaft of the blades into the hole in the bowl from the outer side of the bowl, so they sit securely on the underside of the bowl. This will keep the blades secure and stable during washing.
- Sit the lid and splash guard on their side on the top shelf, and the measuring cup (MC) open-side down also up top.
- The simmering basket is best placed on the top shelf too. Position it upside down with the lid as far open as it will go.
- It’s best to sit the butterfly at the same angle it sits when in place in the bowl, securing the centre of it on one of the dishwasher prongs on the top shelf. I used to put the butterfly upside down in the cutlery basket, but it catches water like that – not ideal!
- Whilst the Varoma and its tray and lid are also all dishwasher safe, I prefer to hand wash these, as they take up so much valuable dishy real estate and they’re simple to hand wash!
Watch the video below for my recommendations on where to put the bowl and accessories in the dishwasher.
Hand Washing the Bowl & Accessories
If you’re going old school, grab a trusty Thermomix bowl brush from the Thermomix online store – I’ve tried so many different brushes and gadgets and these brushes are the best. They’re cheap and they do a great job!
To get in and around the hard-to-access parts of the blades, I use a little mascara brush (also known as ‘spoolie’). You can find these very cheaply on eBay, and they work wonders! They are small, so they get in to all of the hardest to reach places. Straw cleaning brushes are also great for this part of the cleaning job.
Eggshell & Lemon Wash for the Thermomix Bowl
For stubborn stains on the inside base of the bowl ie. scald or burn marks, there are several ways to remove them. Most involve some level of elbow grease, which I prefer to avoid as much as possible for the really stuck-on marks!
Instead of scrubbing, make your life easier with a few eggshells, a lemon or two and some water. Here’s how to deep clean in this way:
- Place 3-4 eggshells in the mixer bowl, along with 1-2 quartered lemons – you can even use the juice from the lemons for something, and use just the leftover pulp and skin for the cleaning. Blitz 10 seconds/speed 7.
- Add water to the 1L mark inside the bowl. Heat 20 minutes/70/speed 2.
- Pour the contents of the bowl out into a large jug – this can be put on your garden.
- Give the bowl a rinse under the tap. You should now have yourself a beautifully shiny, sparkling bowl!
Remember – Very Important!
Always remember to put your bowl back together and ensure it’s completely dry before putting it back on your machine. It’s especially important to make sure the pins don’t have any moisture at all on them.
Thermomix Dishwasher vs. Hand Washing
I know that many of you already use the dishwasher to clean your TMX bowl and accessories, but I hope that this helps those of you that have been holding off, to give it a go. I’ve been washing all of my thermie bowls in the dishwasher for many, many years, and not only is it a great time saver, it hasn’t affected the bowls negatively in any way.
Happy mixing!
Bec xx
